Michael Jackson was more than the greatest musical legend of any recent generation; he was a fashion icon. He became known for the fedoras, the suits the black lofers & white socks and ofcourse: the single glove. And back in the day, that infamous red jacket was worn by many an older brother during their break-dancing phases. In later years, the military jackets would become his staples. Recently, Jackson became noted by the fashionable powers that be for his love of Balmain; the embellished jackets and grand price tags were just up his alley. He also signed on to do a fashion line with Christian Audigier, something that never came to fruition. So, as we look back on the King of Pop, let us look back at the King's Style.

J-5 STYLE
Michael Jackson in the early 1970’s started fashion trends wearing colorful fringed shirts, talored scarves, platforms, and wide bell-bottom pants. Alternating with a purple fedora and a news boy hat to top off his look, he delighted crowds with his astonishingly polished stage presence. Since the early days of the Jackson Five, even as a young child Michael set himself apart from every other musical artist with his tremendous talent, but also utterly unique sense of style. He learned fromn an early age that an audience will pay attention to what you wear just as much as how you sound. So Michael and the Jackson five encorpareted fashion into there stage costuems as well as there personal style.
CLASSIC STYLE
When thinking of Michael’s fashion in 90s, what usually come to mind are his edgy, theatrical costumes he wore on performances. Forgotten are his fine, sophisticated suits and ensembles he was wearing those years. He always strived to look neat and sophisticated. Michael was never caught by the trends and popular fads of the moment. His fashion sense was composed of classic styles, with addition of his own touches like stand out belts, broaches, and his trademark coat of arms and other military inspired accessories.
VIDEO STYLE
With each video and short film Michael Jackson told a story, and the story started with the wardrobe. Michael brought in certain elements to compleate the look and feel of the film to portray the vibe he was going for. From the tiniest artifacts like the tape on the fingers to the biggest props, like a basketball, and often animals, every aspect was carefully thought out. Jackson loved animals and so he featured them in his projects, Black or White, Billie Jean, Leave Me Alone, Remember The Time, Smooth Criminal, and ofcourse Earthsong.
Michael Jackson added a range of accessoris to his costuming. From the suit and ties, fedoras, multipule belts, even to nothing at all, like we see in the piece for In The Closet were Michael is stripped down in just a dirty old t-shirt and black jeans; to a styalized look to compleate a set, like Ghost, Scream or the historic Remeber The Time.

STAGE STYLE
On stage Michael wanted to stand out, he had to be seen by the very last row in the stadium; not arena, because Michael Jackson perforemd in sold out stadiums. Because of that, he needed to be seen, and give the fans the show the've been waiting for. And for that to happen every dance, ever sway, move, beat, kick, look, and breath must be seen. To accomplish this the wardrobe needed to pop. So much to distract the audience at a concet between the stage lights, the crew on the sidelines, the fog machine, the fireworks, the muscians not to mention standing next to screaming fans.
Michael understood this, and fixed his stage wardrobe accordingly. But not just to stand out, to coinside with the music, and the content of the lyrics. When he was up on that stage Michael wanted all eyes on him, so he coordinated the outfits to accentuate the moves. The white sockes so the audience could see the feet, the sequined glove, later replaced by tape on the tips of fingers to create illusions. The Shiny suits, the military costuming, gold leotards, the gold pants, all to shape the movements. The creative mesh of music and stage fashion that Jackson established was unbeatable, to the point were even in siloutte on a dark stage, you could see it was Michael. Effort was put into each category of a tour to produce a good show. Mediocare was not a word we heard when Michael Jackson was performing, and we all understand why, so much carisma and style went into the moves, if you blinked you missed somthing, so nobody wanted to blink. And those stage costumes helped to acomplish that.
